A Short Guide for Dietitians on Billing Secondary Insurance

Trust me. I get it. Billing for patients who just have ONE insurance can be overwhelming. Let alone billing for patients who may have two insurance plans. Yes. Amy P. just said two insurance plans. And I know the thought of that makes your head want to explode. Or at least that is how I felt when I had to bill my first secondary insurance claim.

So, with all those ‘feels’ surrounding submitting secondary insurance claims I thought it would be helpful to create a little Cheatsheet of sorts on secondary insurance.

In this CheatSheet that comes in pdf form, I cover the following scenarios and provide suggestions on the process of how to bill for them

  • Patient has Medicare but is still working and ALSO has insurance benefits through their employer.
  • Patient has Medicare but their spouse is still working and ALSO has insurance benefits through their spouses’s employer
  • Patient has Medicare plus a supplement.
  • Patient has a commercial plan through their employer and then also has insurance through their spouse’s employer
  • Patient is 26 years or younger and has commercial insurance through their employer AND commercial insurance through one of their parent’s employers.
  • Patient is a child and is insured under BOTH’s parent’s insurance plans
  • Patient has been injured. They have both worker’s comp and commercial insurance.
  • Patient has both Medicaid and a commercial insurance plan through their employer
  • Patient is in the military and has Tricare insurance and also has a commercial insurance plan through their employer.

In addition, I include a Medicare spreadsheet that will walk you step-by-step through over 10 different Medicare secondary insurance scenarios.
